Burna Boy, fresh off his latest Billboard cover story, wrapped out the 2022 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 15) night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
The Nigerian singer released the Toni Braxton-inspired “Last Last” and the dub-flavored, laid-back track “Kilometre” in 2021. The Grammy winner confidently strutted and danced around the stage, capping up the BBMAs with a high-energy, enthusiastic performance.
Burna Boy sat down with Billboard’s Heran Mamo for a panel titled “The Explosion of Afro-Fusion” at the first-ever Billboard MusicCon in Las Vegas two days before his BBMAs performance. He recalled how he originally fell in love with the concept of performing when watching *NSYNC perform with Nelly at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.
Grammy Awards (Grammys) In April, he made history as the first Nigerian artist to headline (and sell out) Madison Square Garden. “It’s almost as if I’m better at [performing] than I am at composing music.” Burna Boy remarked in his Billboard cover story, “And that says a lot since I’m pretty talented at making music.” You see how there’s a B.C. and an A.D. with Christ? That seems to be my experience with performing. In the performing arts world, there will be a ‘Before Burna Came’ and a ‘After Burna’s Death’ period. My legacy is that.
